Description
The bowling green pavilion at the Three Magpies Public House was built in 1935 by Wood, Kendrick & Reynolds for Mitchells and Butlers. It is a single-storey structure made of brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring a flat roof. The pavilion has three bays with semi-circular brick piers that create an open loggia leading to the changing rooms at the rear. Inside, there is a terrazzo floor, and the wide timber eaves display a plain Moderne pattern. A later addition includes a timber-framed, half-glazed projection at the front that has enclosed the pavilion. An original iron gate and notice provide access to the beer garden of the Three Magpies.
The pavilion is listed for its group value, as it exemplifies the 'Reformed' public house movement's aim to promote healthy leisure activities alongside drinking. Original plans for the pavilion are held by Birmingham City Council.
