Description
Sarehole Mill is a corn mill located on Cole Bank Road in Hall Green, Birmingham. The mill, which was restored in the 1960s, is largely a rebuild on a site that dates back to around 1764-68. It features an L-shaped block of one and two storeys constructed from red brick, topped with gable end clay tile roofs and brick dentil eaves. A barn stands at right angles to the mill building, with ventilation in its gable end.
The main mill building is two storeys with an attic and includes a restored bracketed, cabled, weatherboarded hoist. It has segmental arched small pane iron frame windows. The single-storey south end of the mill was originally used as a blade grinding shop and has been partially adapted for living accommodation. In the 1850s, the mill reverted to corn grinding, during which time a steam engine was installed, and its stack is built onto the north gable end of the main mill. This tapering square section stack has a cornice cap.
The well-preserved machinery, likely installed when corn grinding resumed in the 1850s and possibly brought from Trittiford Mill, includes a high breast shot cast iron wheel in the main building and a smaller overshot wheel in the former blade grinding plant to the south. The mill also contains a complete set of stones, gearing, hoppers, and other equipment.
