Description

The Squirrels is a large, late 19th-century house, dating to approximately 1895, designed by C.E. Bateman. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has a tile roof. The house is two storeys high with an attic, and comprises four bays. The main facade features a 4-light window alongside a 3-light window, followed by an advanced and gabled bay containing a front door and two 3-light windows above. Further along are a 5-light window and a 4-light window, culminating in a broad, gabled bay with two 4-light windows and a small window in the gable.

The Squirrels, located at No. 1 Cartland Road, has a separate entrance on the right-hand return. Here, there are two gabled bays of differing height and width, alongside a canted bay window with a tiled roof. All windows feature mullions and leaded lights. The design was illustrated in 'The Builder' in 1896.
