Description

Devonshire House is a building located on High Street, constructed in 1902. It is made of red brick and terracotta, with some stone dressings, and stands four storeys tall plus an attic, featuring three bays. The ground floor is finished in terracotta and has six windows set in recesses with ause-de-panier arches, while the two outer bays are topped with ogee gablets. The three upper storeys are divided vertically by thin polygonal shafts with decorative finials and horizontally by wide bands of brick on the outside and terracotta in the centre. The central band is inscribed with 'Alfred Bird and Sons Limited/ Devonshire Works/1837 and 1902' along with foliage designs. The first floor contains pairs of 2-light transomed windows with arched lights, while the second and third floors feature central cross-type windows flanked by pairs of arched windows. The building is topped with an arched parapet, and over the centre bay, there is a shaped gable with two arched windows, tilework depicting a ship in full sail, and small pinnacles. To the left and right of this main composition are later wings of lesser interest, with the left wing having two bays and the right wing having eight bays. Additionally, to the left, there are railings featuring the Bird's custard motif.
