Description
Nos. 62 to 65 on Albion Street, built in 1833 by architect W Tadman Foulkes, are located in the Jewellery Quarter. This three-storey building features a tall red brick facade that spans one bay, with an alternating rhythm of single and paired bays, and three bays grouped at the west end. The brickwork is boldly modeled, showing an Italianate style with some elements of the Queen Anne revival.
The ground floor has a plinth with scalloped brick panels and decorated pedestals that support banded brick pilasters leading up to an entablature. The first floor features plain pilasters rising from a similar base, while the second floor has squat coupled pilaster strips that also rise from a decorated register like the plinth. There are brick dentil cornices between the floors, and the sill bands are made of stone. An ashlar frieze and a prominent eaves cornice are present.
The original double panelled doors lead to a waggon way under a segmental arch on the left side, with flat arched ground floor windows and an entrance that has an arched ashlar-dressed doorway with sidelights and carved work in the spandrels. The first floor has tall round arched windows in moulded stepped reveals with ashlar keys, and the heads of the second floor windows meet the frieze. This building makes an important contribution to the street's appearance and remains virtually unaltered.
