Description
The Glebe House, also known as The Old Deanery, is a two-storey timber-framed building dating from 1781, located on the southwest side of The Butts. The right side of the building dates back to the 15th century and retains original timber framing on the interior. The remainder of the structure, likely from the 17th century, features square timber framing, with some exposed on the upper floor. The elevation facing the road is covered in roughcast and includes modern alterations such as a gabled porch and casement windows with leaded lights. The rear of the building reveals a significant amount of original timber framing. The south end wall is constructed of stone and has a gable head made of square timber framing supported by heavy tie beams, with a roof of machine and old tiles. The Glebe House, along with the County Library Headquarters, Nos 2 to 14 (even), The Old Deanery, and the stone wall to the Deanery Garden, forms a cohesive group.
