Description

Thickthorn Manor is a mansion, now functioning as a nursing home, built around 1820 and restored in 1987. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with a cement-rendered south porch. The building has a rectangular double-depth plan and is designed in a castellated neo-Tudor style. It stands two storeys high and features a symmetrical five-window range, with a slightly projecting three-storey central tower above the castellated porch. The porch has a label mould over a Tudor-arched doorway, which is adorned with carved spandrels and flanked by polygonal angle turrets topped with domed and crocketed finials. There are label moulds over stone-mullioned and transomed cross windows, as well as castellated polygonal angle turrets and a castellated parapet. The side elevations are similar, each featuring a two-window range with full-height canted bay windows and a castellated porch with angle turrets and a Tudor-arched doorway to the south. A three-storey extension was added to the rear in a similar style in 1987.

Inside, the building was restored and remodelled in 1987. It features early 19th-century Gothic-style pilasters with crocketed finials on the ceilings of the entrance lobby and stair hall. There is an early 19th-century open-well staircase with a Georgian-style balustrade on the main flight, Elizabethan-style obelisk finials on the newels, and an Elizabethan-style balcony balustrade. The interior also includes early 19th-century panelled doors flanked by columns leading to castellated cornices, as well as one Tudor-arched fireplace with castellated turrets on the ground floor.
