Description

The Church of Saint Mary, including Beauchamp Chapel, is a Grade I listed building notable for its prominent tower, which can be seen for many miles. The church is historically significant in relation to Northgate Street, Church Street, The Court House, and nearby buildings. The nave, transepts, and tower were rebuilt by Sir William Wilson between 1697 and 1704 after they were destroyed in the great fire of 1694, with design supervision and possible modifications by Sir Christopher Wren. The building retains much of the Gothic spirit, although its details and mouldings reflect a Renaissance character. The late 14th century chancel and Norman crypt add to its historical depth. Inside, there is an 18th-century organ case by Swarbrick and various effigies.

The Beauchamp Chapel, which serves as the Lady Chapel to the south of the chancel, is a fine example of the Perpendicular style, built between 1442 and 1463 to house the well-known tomb and bronze effigy of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, who died in 1439. Other notable interior features include fan vaulting, richly carved stone figures at the east end, a wall painting of the Last Judgement at the west end, 15th-century stained glass, and additional tombs of the Dudley family.
