Description

The Abbey Ruins, founded around 1122 for Augustinians, include a ruinous 14th-century sandstone gatehouse. This gatehouse features early English and decorated styles, along with a detached porter’s lodge that is two storeys high. The gabled attic has been filled in with later timber-frame and brick. The structure includes two trefoil-headed two-light mullions and has a well-preserved circular dial incised on the south wall. The excavated foundations of the church and apsidal chapter-house are minimal. The site is scheduled as an ancient monument.
