Description

The Dirty Duck Public House, formerly known as the Black Swan Inn, is located on Waterside in Stratford-upon-Avon. This building, likely dating from the 17th century, features later alterations, including a refronting from 1738 on the left side and around 1800 on the right, with 20th-century modifications. It is constructed of painted brick and ashlar, with some internal timber framing, and has slate and tile roofs with brick stacks.

The structure is two storeys high and has a two-window range, with an additional two-storey-and-attic, two-window range to the left. The top features a modillioned brick cornice, while the left range includes platt bands on both floors, angle pilasters, and a coped gable. The ground floor has a timber cornice above two entrances with half-glazed doors, situated between three canted bay windows that have small-paned glazing; the rightmost bay extends to two storeys and dates from the 20th century. The right end of the building has a segmental-headed entry with a plank door.

On the first floor, there is a window with a 20th-century small-paned casement above the central bay, while the left end features two windows with moulded sills, architraves, and keys above 16-pane sashes, and a 12-pane sash in the gable. A good wrought-iron sign bracket with scrolly cresting adds to the building's character. The rear includes a hipped side wing to the taller part and two lower wings. Inside, there are some exposed beams and panelling.
