Description
Farnborough Hall stable block and attached gatepiers date from the early to mid-18th century, with a left range and remodelling completed between 1815 and 1816 by Henry Hakewill for William Holbech. The building is constructed of ironstone ashlar and features a string course. It has shallow hipped slate roofs adorned with large, widely spaced wooden dentils. The structure is L-shaped, with a wing on the right extending to the rear, flanking the forecourt of Farnborough Hall.
The stable block is two storeys high and consists of seven bays. The right range, which faces the yard, has five bays and includes a central chamfered segmental carriage arch. There are six-panelled doors on either side of four-panelled double-leaf doors with an overlight above. The ground floor features cross windows, many of which have glazing bars, and stone flat arches. The first floor has leaded lights and stone lintels with keystones. The left range is slightly taller, with a blank ground floor and a first floor that has two round windows, one of which is blocked.
On the left return side facing the forecourt, there is a five-window range with a string course. A central one-bay, one-storey projection has a hipped roof and a Diocletian window. The ground floor features stone cross windows, while the first floor has two-light stone mullioned windows with leaded lights. A painted wood square cupola with a clock is present, featuring simple pilasters, an entablature, and a cornice, topped with a dome and weathervane. There is also a one-storey, one-window section to the left with a cross window and a stone lintel with a keystone.
At the rear, there is a five-bay loggia supported by chamfered wood posts with arched braces in between. The attached square gatepiers have pyramidal caps.
