Description
8 and 9 Church Street are two houses dating from around 1600, which now serve as a restaurant and office. The front was rebuilt in the mid to late 18th century. The buildings are timber-framed with a brick front and feature a tile roof that is half-hipped at one end, along with rear brick stacks. They are two storeys tall and have a five-window range. A brick platt band and a moulded cornice enhance the façade.
The central entrance has an architrave, frieze, and cornice, leading to a six-panel door. To the left, there is a segmental-headed entry with a six-flush-panel door and two glazed panels. Adjacent to this entry is another door with reeded pilaster strips, a frieze, and a cornice, leading to a half-glazed door. The building features two canted bays with cornices and plate glass; the left bay is two-storey with horned sash windows arranged in a 2:4:2 pattern and a cornice above. The right side has windows with rubbed brick flat arches over four-pane sashes in wide frames, and there are two 20th-century dormers at the right end. Originally, these houses were part of a longer row extending to the right. The inner segmental-headed door to No. 9 has four fielded panels and one top segmental panel.
