Description

The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter, Paul and Elizabeth was built in 1853 for the Throckmorton family and designed by Charles Hansom in 1851. The church features regularly coursed limestone and a tiled roof with crested ridge tiles and coped gables. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style, specifically the Decorated style, with a wide nave, chancel, north chapel, a south-west turret, and a south porch.

The church has a 5-bay nave and a 2-bay chancel and chapel. The west front includes arched double-leaf doors with a hood mould and stops, while the east and west windows are 3-light traceried windows, also with hood moulds and head stops. The tall, thin south-west turret starts as a square and transitions to an octagonal shape, topped with trefoil openings, gargoyles, and a pyramidal roof. The south doorway is double-chamfered and features double-leaf doors. The south porch has coped gables and buttresses that are flush with the front, and an arch with a hood mould and head stops. The nave contains 2-light traceried windows throughout, and the north chapel features diagonal and single buttresses with 2-light traceried windows. There is a north porch made of stone, timber, and glass.

A single-storey link connects the church to the priest's house, which has a tall central gable, a shouldered door, and casement windows. Inside, the walls are plastered, and the nave has a scissor brace roof. There is a west gallery, and the chancel arch lacks imposts. The chancel features a panelled wagon roof with decorative painted and stencilled work, a carved stone altar, and a reredos. The chapel has a 2-bay arcade with round shafts and a plain panelled wagon roof.

Fittings include a piscina and seat, a stone pulpit, and a font with relief carvings supported by five colonettes. Some original stained glass can be found in the nave, the chapel's east window, and the chancel's east window, attributed to Hardman. This church is a well-preserved example of a 19th-century Catholic church.
