Description

Forge Cottage and Guy Fawkes House, formerly known as The Lion Inn, are two houses located in Dunchurch, dating from the 16th century with alterations and additions from the 20th century. The buildings are timber framed with close studding, a jettied first floor, tension braces, and plastered infill, although some areas have been replaced with plaster. The right return side and rear range facing Daventry Road are constructed of brick. They feature old tile roofs and an internal brick stack. The layout consists of a 4-unit through-passage plan with a cross wing on the right, extending to an L-plan at the rear. The buildings are two storeys tall with an attic and have an irregular front with a five-window range.

Forge Cottage, on the left, has a late 20th-century glazed door with a flanking window, and a plank door leading to the passage at the rear. Guy Fawkes House, on the right, features a plank door as well. The windows throughout include 19th and 20th-century two and three-light casements with glazing bars, while a rendered gable has a small two-light casement. The right return side has a one-window range with three-light casements and a brick segmental arch at the ground floor. There is also a long, lower, windowless range to the right. The interiors have not been inspected. It is said that the Warwickshire conspirators waited in The Lion Inn to hear the results of the Gunpowder Plot.
