Description
The Rugby School War Memorial is a memorial cross built in 1920, designed by Sir Charles Nicholson. It is made of Clipsham stone and has a hexagonal shape with a lantern head, shaft, plinth, and a stepped platform.
The head of the memorial features a lantern design with alternating openings and closed panels, each displaying a cross motif. These elements are topped with moulded, ogee heads and gablets. Above the lantern, the monument is finished with a crocketed pinnacle. The shaft of the memorial tapers gradually and includes a moulded base with broaches. The plinth has a cavetto moulding at the top and a chamfered base. On the south side of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads ‘IN REMEMBRANCE / OF OUR DEAD / 1914 – 1919 / THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED / IN THE MEMORIAL CHAPEL’. The plinth is supported by four hexagonal steps.
