Description
The School House at Rugby School, built between 1809 and 1813 by Henry Hakewell, is designed in the Tudor style. It features brown brick with stone dressings and has served as the residence for many headmasters of the school, including Dr. Arnold, and was the home of Matthew Arnold. The building has an irregular L shape with an octagonal tower above the entrance arch at the corner. There are wide stone steps leading up to a recessed porch that is flanked by buttresses. The windows are mainly sash style, and the building has a battlemented parapet. It stands at two to three storeys high and is noted for its historical significance. The School House, along with the New and Old Quad Buildings and Doctor's Wall, forms a group with the Chapel and War Memorial Chapel at Rugby School.
