Description
This building, located approximately 50 meters northeast of Middleton Hall, is a Grade II* house that was originally used as farm buildings. It dates from around 1600 and features a timber frame with brick infill panels set on a sandstone plinth, topped with a plain tile roof. The structure has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a four-bay main range aligned north-south and facing west, with a two-bay cross-wing at the north end.
The house is two storeys high and displays four tiers of square panels, with straight braces in the cross-wing and curved braces in the main range. The front has a 1:5 window arrangement. The gabled cross-wing on the left includes a double-leaf door on the ground floor and a blocked doorway on the first floor, positioned left of center. The roof truss features a tie-beam and double collar with V-struts above the upper collar and vertical struts below both collars.
To the right of center, the main range has a two-storey gabled porch with a collar-and-tie-beam roof truss that also incorporates V-struts above the collar. The doorway and first-floor window in the porch are boarded up. There is an inserted three-centred brick carriage arch to the left, which leads to the farmyard. A window from the early 19th century is located in the center of the first floor, featuring four round-headed lights and raised keys, with chamfered mullion windows on either side. The right-hand gable end reveals an exposed tie-beam-and-double-collar roof truss with V-struts above the upper collar.
Inside, the building boasts a large open fireplace on the ground floor, along with chamfered and stopped ceiling beams. The roof trusses support two pairs of purlins, and wind braces are present in the upper pair.
