Description

The Ansley War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1921 by an unknown architect. It features a Portland stone cross atop a slender, tapering octagonal shaft, which stands on a stepped, square plinth with mouldings at the top and bottom. Below this is a three-stepped base. The entire memorial is set on a raised platform with battered sides, clad in roughly-squared Hollingford sandstone. The pedestal has an inscription on its western face that reads: "TO THE HONOUR / OF THE ANSLEY MEN WHO / SERVED THEIR COUNTRY / IN HIS MAJESTYS FORCES / DURING THE GREAT WARS / 1914 - 1919 / 'LEST WE FORGET' / 1939 - 1945." The eastern face features a modern rectangular slate plaque with painted lettering listing the names of 32 men who died in World War I and eight casualties from World War II.

The land for the memorial was gifted to the Parish Council by the Ansley Coal and Iron Company on 21 August 1920, and it was dedicated on 21 August 1921 by Dr Charles Lisle-Carr, the Bishop of Coventry. Originally, the memorial was flanked by two gun carriages, which were removed at the start of World War II.

The Ansley War Memorial is recognized for its social interest as a poignant reminder of the impact of world events on the community, its historical significance both locally and nationally, and its architectural merit as a well-executed memorial of simple, elegant design.
