Description
The retaining wall, piers, and well located approximately 20 yards north of Swiss Cottage date from the early 19th century. Constructed from ashlar stone with herringbone tooling, the wall stretches about 30 yards in length and runs east-west, facing north. It bows backwards towards the west end, creating a large recess that is highlighted by two circular end piers with moulded caps. At the eastern end of the wall, there is a 3-centred arch that forms the entrance to a well. This structure is an important part of the garden layout at Alton Towers, which is recognized as Grade I on the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Gardens Register.
