Description
New Road Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, which was substantially rebuilt in the 17th century and largely re-walled in the mid to late 19th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 20th century. The house has a timber frame, with 17th-century square-panelled framing to the cross wing; the walls are predominantly brick, and the roof is covered in plain tiles with brick ridge stacks. Originally a medieval hall house, it was remodelled in the 17th century into a T-plan layout with a cross wing to the left. The house is one storey and has an attic, with a four-window front. The front facing Martins Way has flat arches over 20th-century windows on the ground floor, and two gabled dormers with late 19th-century three-light casement windows. A lean-to porch provides access to the rear of the building. Internally, the house contains two pairs of medieval cruck roof timbers; the northern pair and their associated purlins are blackened by smoke and terminate in collars. There are also stop-chamfered spine beams and joists, two open fireplaces, and a room to the south of the former hall that features a cyma-stopped chamfered beam and a fireplace bressummer.
