Description
23, 23A, 23B, and 23C Greengate Street are two shops and offices dating from the early to mid 18th century. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a tile roof with brick end stacks. It has two storeys with an attic and a four-window range.
The ground floor is highlighted by a modillioned cornice, quoins at the first floor, and a top timber frieze with a dentilled cornice. The round-headed entrance includes a doorcase with fluted pilasters and an open pediment, topped by a fanlight with radial glazing bars above a six-panel door. Flanking the entrance are two small-paned shopfronts from the late 20th century.
On the first floor, the windows have rubbed brick flat arches with ashlar keys above nine-pane horned sashes set in moulded frames. There are also four pedimented dormers with six-pane horned sashes. At the rear, the building has a lean-to outshut and a gabled wing, along with a flat-roofed stair wing. Inside, there is a stick-baluster stair.
