Description
Moat House Farmhouse is a 19th-century building that features roughcast over an earlier timber frame, likely originating from the medieval period. It was originally a hall house, which underwent alterations in the late 17th century when a chamber floor was inserted. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys high, with 19th-century and modern casement windows. The front, facing west, includes one 19th-century casement window and a plain modern door topped with a small carved wood panel inscribed "Thomas Reynolds 1680". The gabled ends have modern barge-boards, and there is a central brick stack. The north and east sides are covered with old tiles, while modern tiles are used elsewhere.
Inside, the house retains original heavy roof timbers, including an arched-braced collar beam truss, and features a wide fireplace that was likely added in the late 17th century, along with chamfered ceiling beams. Traces of a moat can still be seen along the north and east boundaries.
