Description

This First World War memorial cross was designed in 1920 by W.D. Caröe, with additions made later to commemorate the Second World War. It is constructed from Clipsham limestone and is situated on the corner of Newport Road and Royds Close, though it was moved to this location in 1977; it was originally positioned on the corner of Newport Road and Brazenhill Lane. The memorial is in the form of a Latin cross rising from a plinth on an octagonal, three-stepped base. Carved in relief on the cross head is an arrow, a symbol of St Giles, referencing the nearby Church of St Giles, which is a Grade II* listed building. The front face of the plinth features the inscription “WENT THE DAY WELL/ WE DIED AND NEVER KNEW/ BUT WELL OR ILL + +/ ENGLAND WE DIED FOR YOU.” The south face of the top step of the base is inscribed “1914 + 1919,” with the names of eleven fallen soldiers inscribed on the step below. The east face is inscribed “1939 + 1945,” with the name of the fallen from that conflict inscribed beneath. Finally, the north face of the top step bears the inscription "THIS MEMORIAL WAS/ RESITED DURING/ THE SILVER JUBILEE YEAR OF/ QUEEN ELIZABETH II IN 1977."
