Description
Nos. 45 and 46 Greengate Street is a house that is now part of a hotel with two shops on the ground floor. It dates from the late 16th century and has 18th-century alterations. The building features a timber frame with stucco cladding and a double-span tile roof with a brick stack. It has a right-angle plan and stands three storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range. The second floor jetties out and has gables, with brackets and pendants. The jetty over the first floor is adorned with Doric modillions and enriched bargeboards.
The ground floor has two 20th-century shopfronts. On the first floor, there are two projecting windows with 9/1-pane sashes, which were originally 9/6-pane. To the right, there is a canted oriel window with 6/1, 12/1, and 6/1-pane sashes, originally 6/4- and 12/8-pane. The second floor features two tripartite sashes with a configuration of 2:6:2 panes, while the attic has small-paned windows with architraves. At the rear, there are two gabled wings, one of which is longer.
Inside, there is a single flight of Jacobean stairs with openwork balusters that have stunted capitals, located between the second floor and the attic. The cellars are stone-vaulted and are reputed to contain a priest's hide.
