Description
The Church of St Lawrence is one of the six collegiate churches in Staffordshire. It has a cruciform shape with a central tower. The core of the building dates back to the 12th century, which includes the crossing arches and much of the walling. There were significant alterations made in the 13th and 14th centuries. The clerestory of the nave and the upper part of the tower were added in the late medieval period. The church features a fine 14th-century east window that contains modern painted glass from 1922. There is a mutilated alabaster effigy of a knight from the 15th century. The north aisle roof is from the 16th century, while the other roofs are modern. An interesting and unusual feature is the 12th-century triforium located in the south transept. Most of the fittings inside the church are modern.
