Description
Bank Top Farmhouse is an early 18th century or possibly late 17th century farmhouse with a T plan layout, standing two storeys tall. It is constructed of brick on an ashlar sandstone plinth. The rear wing houses the staircase and service areas. The building features a gable end roof covered with old tiles, coped gable ends, and brick chimney stacks. There is a band between the storeys. The south front has four windows with modern wood mullion transomed casements, although it retains old furniture. The rear wing has cambered, gauged brick arched casements.
Inside, the main south range is divided into two bays by timber stud partitions, and there is a large open fireplace with a stone surround on the east wall. The ground and first floor rooms to the southwest are fully panelled in oak, featuring a mitred rail and muntin style that dates back to the late 17th century, some of which may have been reset. There are also significant sections of panelling in the southeast first floor room and reset panels on the ground and first floors of the staircase. The staircase itself, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, has a solid string with turned balusters and square capped newel posts, arranged in dog leg runs.
