Description

Holbein House is a Grade II listed building located on the north-east side of High Street in Kinver. This house, which also incorporates shops, dates back to the 15th century and was extended in the late 17th century. It underwent restoration in the mid to late 20th century by John Smith of Kinver. The building features a timber frame with a plain tile roof.

The front has closely spaced studs, while the rear has large rectangular panels. The studs are secured by a single peg at each end, and the 17th-century extension includes small square panels and a tension brace. The house has a T-shaped plan, with the original 15th-century section consisting of two framed bays that run parallel to the street. A chimney stack is located on the north-west side of the central truss, and there is an alleyway at the south-east end, which previously had a door leading into the south-east bay. At the rear, there is a single-bay wing from the 17th century.

The building has two storeys, with the upper floor jettied, supported by a moulded jetty beam that is morticed onto the ends of the joists. The first floor features two 20th-century five-light wood mullioned windows, while the ground floor has two 20th-century plate glass shop fronts, each with a glazed door. There is also a boarded door on the right that provides access to the alleyway.

Inside, the property showcases a chamfered and stopped spine beam, with joists laid flat. It contains three 15th-century queen strut roof trusses with curved windbraces, as well as a late 17th-century interrupted tie beam truss with V-struts above the collar.
