Description

The Brewood War Memorial stands in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin and St Chad's Church and was designed in 1920-1921 by William Douglas Caröe. It is constructed of stone and takes a Gothic style. The memorial comprises a Latin gabled cross with crocketed braces positioned atop a tall, approximately 5-metre high, tapering hexagonal shaft. A relief carving of St George and the dragon is set within a niche on the south face of the shaft. The shaft terminates in three courses of weathering upon a square pedestal with rounded offsets to the corners. An inscription is carved in bas relief using a Celtic font around the square base. The inscription on the east face reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN"; on the north face, "OF BREWOOD WHO FELL IN THE"; on the west face, "GREAT WAR 1914-1918"; and on the south face, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." A hexagonal step below carries the names of those who died in the First World War. A later inscription, in a similar font, appears on the middle step, reading "AND IN THE WAR/1939-1946," with the corresponding names listed below. A church committee was formed in early 1920 to raise £400 for the memorial, which was designed by Caröe, who was Senior Architect to the Church Commissioners in England from 1895. Clary and Wright of Ipswich were commissioned as chief masons, while J E Tylerson of London produced the St George relief. The surplus funds raised were used to create memorial jars placed around the cross. The cross was unveiled in 1921. The memorial is a significant and striking monument within the churchyard, commemorating those from Brewood who died in both World Wars. It contributes to the group value of the churchyard, alongside the Grade I listed church and numerous other listed monuments.
