Description
The ice house, located approximately 100 metres south of the south front of Oakley Hall, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of red brick and coursed sandstone rubble. The entrance features a round arch with rubblestone voussoirs beneath a coped stone gable, which is accessed via a lateral flight of steps at a right angle to the right. Inside, a short tunnel is brick-lined and leads to an egg-shaped cavity that is stone-lined and covered by a brick dome, measuring approximately 3.5 metres in diameter externally. This ice house is a well-preserved example of its type, notable for its architectonic entrance.
