Description
Old Madeley Manor is the remains of a manor house, likely dating from the 15th or early 16th century. It is constructed of coursed red sandstone, with only a fragment of walling surviving to a maximum height of just over 3 meters. This remaining structure includes part of the springing of an external round-headed doorway that features a portcullis groove and a chamfered arch. To the south, there is a window at ground level, which may have once lit a cellar, and the remains of a large fireplace that has knife sharpening grooves on one side. Nearby, several blocks of dressed masonry can be found. Impressive fishponds or moats are located immediately to the north and west, and in the surrounding fields, there are extensive earthworks, some of which, to the northeast, may have been part of the house's garden. The manor house itself was partly timber framed, and there is an engraving of it in Plot's History of Staffordshire. The site is designated as a Scheduled Monument, and some renovation of the existing stonework was carried out in 1980.
