Description

Mow Cop Wesleyan Chapel and Manse date to 1852. The chapel is constructed of ashlar with a hipped slate roof, featuring a chamfered plinth and coved and cyma recta moulded eaves.

The south front has three bays, with fixed windows containing glazing bars and semi-circular heads. C20 windows are set within the original openings on the ground floor. A central boarded door has a semi-circular head, pilastered surround, and a cyma recta moulded cornice hood. The east front mirrors the south, with three bays of fixed windows with semi-circular heads. The west front has a central two-leaf door with a keyed fanlight and a pilastered, open pedimented surround. Flanking the door are two-storey stair windows, also with semi-circular heads springing from an impost band connecting to the south front sill band. A circular first-floor window with radiating glazing bars is centrally positioned.

The attached manse is to the left, constructed of ashlar with a fish-scale tile roof and brick integral end stacks. It has two storeys with coved eaves and two bays with four-pane sashes, and a central C20 glazed door.

Inside, the ground floor contains a large schoolroom with annexes and a vestry, with removable panelled partition walls. The school was accessed from a door on the south front. The first floor is occupied by the chapel, which retains original choir stalls and an elaborate wooden pulpit. The congregation entered via the west door and its flanking staircases.
