Description
The front wall and gate piers to the courtyard of the former Episcopal Palace in Lichfield date from around 1687-1688. The wall extends approximately 82 meters along the front of the palace courtyard and features three gates. Constructed from ashlar, it has an offset plinth and moulded coping. The main gate piers are rusticated and topped with cornice caps, with buttresses on the inner faces designed to support gates, which were not in place at the time of review. To the left, there are two gates with simpler designs; one includes a wrought-iron gate, while the far end has paired plank gates. There is also a blocked gate to the right of the main gate. This fine wall and its gate piers significantly enhance the setting of the palace.
