Description
Sandfields Lodge and Sandfields House are two houses dating from the 18th century, with early 19th-century alterations and additions, partly incorporated into a house built around 1860. They are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and feature tile roofs with brick stacks. The buildings are arranged in an L-plan, with a later range to the left, and are designed in the Georgian Gothick style.
Sandfields Lodge is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range. It features two full-height canted bays with simple coping that flank a pedimented bay. The porch has an embattled parapet and a pointed entrance with an ogival hood mould, along with flanking pointed windows that have Y-tracery glazing. Continuous hood moulds with head stops run above the windows, though the outer ones are damaged. The windows have label moulds over two-light small-paned casements with pointed lights, and the bays have blind windows on the cants. The roof is hipped at the end, with lateral stacks and a large axial stack.
Sandfields House incorporates a gabled wing to the left, which has a lean-to conservatory below a window with a label mould over a two-light casement that lacks glazing bars. The remainder of the house, built around 1860, has a double-depth plan and features a double-gable roof with end and cross-axial stacks. It displays Tudor details and has a two-window range with ashlar cross-mullioned windows that also have label moulds. The return side includes wide verges, a canted bay window, and an entrance with a four-centred head and a cornice to the ashlar surround.
Sandfields Lodge served as a private lunatic asylum from around 1818 to 1856.
