Description
The former malthouse, built in 1874 by George Scamell of London for the City Brewery Company, is located to the rear of Magnet Joinery on Birmingham Road in Lichfield. This three-storey building features a twelve-window range with a five-storey cross-wing. Constructed from brick with buff brick and ashlar dressings, it has slate roofs and a rectangular plan.
The north elevation, which faces the railway, includes a coped gable on the right end of the wing and a steep hipped roof running north-south, with louvres under pyramidal roofs at each end. The windows have sills and buff brick segmental heads, while the top floor windows feature ashlar lintels. Most windows are set in tall recesses with top cogged cornices and were originally fitted with small-paned glazing, though they are now shuttered. There is a central round-headed recess under the hip with an entrance on the first floor. Gabled timber hoist canopies are located to the right of centre and on the wing.
The right return has a four-window range with windows in tall recesses and a small 20th-century addition at the left end. The rear of the building displays similar architectural details. Brewing was a significant local industry from the late 19th century, but little evidence of it remains today.
