Description

This is a pair of gate piers and an attached wall, dated 1673, located approximately 100 yards south-west of Whittington Old Hall. The gate piers are made of rusticated ashlar, while the wall is constructed from red brick with ashlar coping and extends about 20 yards in length. Each pier is square in shape and features a cap with a projecting cornice, along with the base of a former finial on top. The frieze of each pier includes an oval panel; the left pier has an oval frieze with the inscription "FOYIST / TOVT," and the right pier is inscribed with the year 1673. These gate piers originally marked the entrance to the grounds of Whittington Old Hall, which is now blocked by the existing wall.
