Description
The Thatch is a 16th-century cottage located on Uttoxeter Road in Mavesyn Ridware. It features a combination of timber framing, including post and truss and cruck construction, with painted brick infill panels. The roof is hipped and thatched, with a brick ridge stack. The cottage has a two-cell baffle-entry plan and may have originally contained an open hall. It is one storey with an attic and has three tiers of square panels. The windows are irregularly placed, with small 20th-century windows on the ground floor to the left and right, and a small attic dormer on the right. The central entrance has a 20th-century door and a small thatched porch. To the right, there is a single-storey painted brick extension with a tall brick end stack and a 20th-century casement window.
Inside, there is a central curved cruck truss. The chimney stack is built against the north side of this truss and features a timber bressumer that supports a chamfered spine beam. There is also a chamfered cross beam in the south bay, likely added later. The north gable is constructed using post and truss and has a queen strut roof truss.
