Description
Burton St Chad War Memorial is a First World War memorial dating from around 1920, which was altered following the Second World War. It is made of sandstone and is situated within the grounds of the Church of St Chad, which is a Grade I listed building, to the west of the church.
The memorial features a cross fleury on a collared shaft, which rises from a pedestal on a two-stepped octagonal base. The west face of the cross shaft includes a niche at the base that holds a carved figure with an anchor, beneath which the word "SPES" is carved in relief. The pedestal has four niches, each containing a religious figure. The north-west face of the top step of the base is inscribed with "1914-1918," while the west face reads "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," and the south-west face notes "1939-1945."
The memorial is set on a circular paved area within the churchyard.
