Description

Pickford's Bonded Warehouse is a late 19th-century bonded stores and grain warehouse located on Derby Road. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof. The building stands four storeys tall and has a long range of 18 windows that flanks the former Midland Railway line. The windows are cast iron casements set under segmental brick heads, and there is a 20th-century square-headed door in the center beneath a flat canopy. The roof is notable for its ten hipped ridges and overhanging eaves.

The front elevation includes an enclosed siding to the right, while the ground floor has been altered to include a loading bay and a 20th-century office extension to the left of center. There are three windows to the left of a 20th-century weatherboarded hoist that rises to ridge level and has a hipped roof. To the right, there are another three windows, beyond which is a 20th-century brick lift shaft, followed by one additional window. The elevation facing the railway features a painted inscription that reads 'Midland Railway/Bonded Stores and Grain Warehouse No 4', along with other painted inscriptions referring to the successor LMS Railway. This grain warehouse is an important part of Burton's industrial history, showcasing the close relationship between the brewing industry and the railway that facilitated the transport of large quantities of raw materials.
