CLARENCE STREET 1. 5369 Office block, loading bay and north malthouse of the former Yeomans, Cherry and Curtin Brewery SK 22 SW 6/55

    1. Designed by Scamell & Collyer of London. Red brick; 4 and 5 storeys. 3 blocks. On left, the office block has 4 recessed semi-circular headed bays each with a segmental-headed window, that to 3rd storey with keyblock. To right is a gabled loading bay having 2 blocked windows above open bay supported on plain cast iron column at centre. On right-hand side the former North Malting is set at right-angles to the street and fronted by a kiln said to be of unique type being octagonal on plan and originally with a circular interior in which the malt was turned by rotating steam-driven prongs. The former kiln is of 5 storeys and one window to each face. Faces are panelled and windows generally blocked but elsewhere with multi-paned cast iron lights. The kiln has a tall octahedral slate roof surmounted by a metal cowl with vane in the shape of a goat. 4-storeyed, 9 window block extends to rear.
