Description
Bass New Brewery is a large red brick brewery complex built between 1864 and 1865. It is arranged in two and three storeys along the sides of a deep and narrow rectangular yard, with a prominent four-storey block at the centre that houses the brewhouse. The walls are designed in the typical brewery style of Burton, featuring shallow full-height arcaded recesses that contain sash or pivot windows. The ends of the ranges facing the road are designed as double gables, complete with copings and kneelers. The gables also feature oculi and blind giant arcading arranged in a tripartite grouping that mirrors the detail of the side elevations. At the north end of the yard, on the first floor of the side ranges, there are galleried cast iron water tanks supported by cast iron columns. The eastern range includes one of the last two traditional "Union" lines for natural fermentation in Burton, preserving the original internal layout. The New Brewery is one of the oldest remaining breweries in the town.
