Description
The stables, entrance arch, and railings, built around 1900, are located approximately 100 meters northeast of The Lawns. They are constructed from red brick, with the entrance arch rendered, and feature hipped slate roofs. The building has a U-shaped plan surrounding a cobbled courtyard that is open to the east but partially screened by a rendered entrance arch. This arch has a taller central section with a pediment and an octagonal bellcote above a clock, flanked by two pedestrian arches. The arches have projecting even quoins and are topped with dentilled cornices at the impost level of the main arch, with raised keystones and a coffered intrados in the center. Short screens of spearhead cast iron railings, along with pedestrian gates set on dwarf walls, connect the entrance to the stables.
The two-storey block features light color banding and cogged eaves. The sides consist of nine bays, with sash windows on the left and casement windows on the right wings. There are five segmental-headed coach entries on the left, with stables and offices located in the right and center sections. The right-hand wing has a pediment corbelled over the eaves at the east end, a substantial stack to the left, and a single-storey addition below that includes a three-sided bay partially encroaching on the entrance screen. This structure is part of the complete Edwardian mansion layout at The Lawns, which was built for the Bass family.
