Description
A boundary stone dating from the late 18th or early 19th century is located on the south bank of Rising Brook, approximately 75 metres south east of Dutton's Pool. The stone is constructed from local stone and is rectangular in plan, with a rounded top. It is roughly hewn and noticeably weathered, particularly on its west face, which is oriented downstream. A diagonal fissure is visible across the west face, extending also to parts of the south and east faces, likely caused by a hole created in the centre of the east face. The stone forms a pair with another boundary marker on the opposite bank of the brook, though they face in different directions. This stone is associated with the historic nail-making industry of Slitting Mill, which operated alongside the Rising Brook. It marks part of the historic boundary between the parishes of Rugeley and Horton, established in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of a pair of markers positioned on either side of the brook. It retains its original location, illustrating the administrative development of the region, and possesses group value with the other surviving boundary stone.
