Description
Ercall Hall is a large sandstone house built in 1608 for Sir Francis Newport by the mason Walter Hancock, who also designed the Market Hall in Shrewsbury and possibly Condover Hall. The house is situated on a moated site, with earthworks visible to the north and north-west. It has an L-shaped plan and features a north-east front made of red brick with a blue brick diaper pattern and stone dressings. The steeply-pitched tiled gabled roof rises over three storeys and five bays, with three projecting gables. The central gable includes a stone panel with an inscription. The windows are four-light stone mullions with cornices, and there are large brick chimney stacks with grouped shafts. The rear wing is constructed of sandstone with brick gables and stone mullion windows.
