Description
The Royal Victoria Hotel, built in 1830, is a three-storey building constructed of painted ashlar. The façade features five sash windows set in moulded architraves with slight cornices. Plain pilasters flank the upper storeys, with coupled pilasters defining the bays, all topped with gilded Corinthianesque capitals. The ground storey is rusticated, with a plain frieze and a moulded cornice at the first floor. A recessed central doorway is framed by a stone Tuscan porch in antis. The three central bays slightly project and have a pediment above. The ground storey has quoins, and the building is topped with a moulded eaves cornice and tiles. To the left of the doorway, there are 19th-century iron forecourt railings, and a painted metal hanging sign depicting a bunch of grapes, the emblem of a vintner. The interior has been significantly altered but still retains the original plain staircase. Extensive modern additions have been made at the rear, which are not included in the listing.
