Description

The Church of St Matthew, built in 1843 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, is a rather plain church designed in the Early English Gothic style. It is constructed of ashlar and features steeply pitched roofs covered with fishscale tiles. The church includes a nave, north and south transepts, a chancel, and a south porch. A gabled bellcote is situated over the west end of the nave. The windows are lancet style, with the east window featuring triple lancets, while the transepts have plate tracery. A modern vestry has been added to the west end in a Gothic style. Inside, there is a gallery at the west end and arch-braced roofs with tiebeams in the nave. This building is noted as an early work of Scott.
