Description
This building is a row of nine cottages located at 265-281 Hartshill Road, dating from around 1860. Constructed from brick, the cottages feature plain tiled roofs with scalloped bands and ridge cresting. Designed in a Gothic style, they are one-and-a-half storeys tall, with each cottage having a single-unit plan. The terrace is symmetrical, with outer gables flanking six dormers that have trefoiled windows that are corbelled-out. Each ground floor cottage has a projecting gabled porch with a paired two-centred arched doorway. Terracotta reliefs depicting biblical scenes, such as Adam and Eve, are found in the apex of the porch gables. The lower windows are three-light casements, while the outer gables have porches on their side elevations and square projecting bay windows at ground level. The cottages feature pronounced bargeboards supported by corbels and decorative diaper bands of blue brickwork, along with fluted axial stacks.
