Description
The garden retaining wall and flight of steps adjoining Pitchford Hall to the southeast were built in the 1870s and 1880s, likely by George Devey, and may include parts of an earlier wall. The structure is made of coursed red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and stone coping. It measures approximately 34 metres long and 1 to 2 metres high, featuring a convex curved projection to the east. There is a flight of 8 stone steps to the south, flanked by returned retaining walls and square ashlar piers topped with globe finials. This wall may be a rebuilding or replacement of a structure in a similar location that appears on an estate map from 1714, which is kept in the house. The retaining wall is significant as it contributes to the setting of Pitchford Hall, particularly when viewed from the east.
