Description

Numbers 22 and 23, known as Top Farmhouse, is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 16th century, with later alterations and additions from the 19th century. The building is timber framed, featuring rendered wattle and daub along with red brick nogging, and has coursed red sandstone and red brick additions. It has a plain tile roof with a catslide over an outshut at the rear.

The farmhouse is designed in an L-shape and consists of three framed bays with additional structures at the back. It has one storey and an attic, along with a two-storey addition. The front features two gabled eaves dormers that contain two-light wooden casements, shaped barge boards, and finials. There is a brick stack located behind the ridge, slightly off-centre to the left, as well as an integral brick end stack on the right and an external brick end stack on the rear wing.

The framing includes heavy square panels, with three panels extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate, and short straight corner braces. The front has four windows, including one- and three-light 19th-century wooden casements, and a canted bay window second from the left. There is an off-centre gabled porch to the right, featuring pierced scalloped barge boards and a finial, along with a door that has six flush panels. The left-hand gable end has a 19th-century gabled porch, a two-light attic casement from the 19th century, and an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and v-struts.

At the rear, there are two gabled wings. Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered beams and joists with ogee stops, square-panelled framed cross-walls with shaped-headed blocked doorways, and a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. There are various 19th-century fireplaces, and the dairy in the outshut at the rear has low shelves.
