Description
The Cureton Memorial is a pedestal tomb located approximately 1.5 meters north of the vestry of the Church of St. Mary in Hordley. It dates from around 1819 and is made of sandstone. The tomb has a square section with a moulded plinth and capping, topped by a scalloped urn finial adorned with festooned garlands. It features fluted corner piers with fluted decoration at the top and rosettes at the corners. There are oval inscription panels with carved floral decoration in the spandrels; the south panel commemorates Margaret Cureton, who died in 1819, while the west panel honors her husband, William, who died in 1833. Additional inscriptions for various members of the Cureton family are found on the other sides. The memorial formerly stood within a railed enclosure, of which the moulded stone plinth still remains.
