Description
These kitchen garden walls, attached garden buildings and a gardener's house date from approximately 1822-28 and were designed by Sir John Soane. Later alterations and additions were made in the late 19th century.
The red brick walls, constructed in English bond except for the northern length which is in Flemish bond, are topped with grey sandstone coping. The rectangular enclosure measures approximately 80 x 45 metres and features quadrant corners and link walls to the west, connecting to the former gardener’s house. Entrances are located in the corners of the east and west walls and in the centre of the south wall, each consisting of round archways with large, flush-panelled doors (eight panels with two-panelled tympana) and flanking piers with panelled, dome-shaped stone finials. Similar piers are at the junctions with the quadrant link walls to the former gardener's house. The northern length of wall is higher than the rest and was raised in the late 19th century to accommodate a greenhouse on its south side. Steps descend the slope in three sections. Panelled end piers are present, along with stone flue caps featuring miniature pediments and antefixae in a style typical of Soane’s designs.
A lean-to fruit house is situated on the north side, aligned with the former roof height. It is built of red brick with stone-coped parapeted end walls and a graded slate roof. The windows are 20-paned glazing bar sashes, and the doors are boarded with stone hinge blocks and tapered stone lintels to accommodate the ground's slope. A late 19th century brick water tower adjoins the east end. The central room of the fruit house projects slightly and has a doorway leading into the kitchen garden; this room was labelled “Fruit Room” on Soane's drawings. Late 19th century lean-to wrought-iron greenhouses are situated on the south side of the wall, featuring T-section ribs, curbed at the base and resting on low brick walls with a short projecting section at a right angle to the right. The Flemish bond construction of this section of the garden walls was intended to facilitate the passage of hot air, aiding in the cultivation of fruit.
The Garden House is constructed of red brick with a hipped, graded slate roof and lead flat. It has two storeys over a basement and wide eaves. Two brick stacks, each consisting of two square shafts with inset corners, are present. The west front has three bays with 20-pane glazing bar sashes, stone cills and stone lintels with recessed lower edges. First-floor windows are ten-pane glazing bar sashes. Set back one storey, there are two-bay wings. Flat roofs with coped parapets and parapeted gable ends are present, along with integral brick end stacks. Semi-circular openings are found in each gable end. A one-storey, five-bay addition is set back to the left, and a 20th century addition is set back to the right. A further one-storey, 20th century addition is located between the quadrant link walls at the rear.
These buildings once served as the kitchen garden for Pell Wall. Drawings of the kitchen garden, by Soane, are preserved in the Soane Museum.
